1. Abu Salamah from Abu Hurayrah (rta)
Abu Hurayrah stated: “I heard God’s Messenger say: ‘An ant bit
a prophet from among the past prophets. At this, he ordered
the whole territory of ants to be burnt. Thereafter, God sent
this revelation to him: “One ant bit you and in return you
burnt all of them, who were glorifying God.”’”
Following is the schematic illustration of the isnad of this
narrative’s variants:
2. ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Hurmuz from Abu Hurayrah
(rta)
Abu Hurayrah stated: “I heard God’s Messenger say: ‘Once a
prophet sat under a tree when an ant bit him. At this, he
ordered that all of ants in its habitat be taken out and
burnt. So, they were burnt. Thereafter, God sent this
revelation to him: “Why did you not burn just that ant that
bit you.”’”
Following is the schematic illustration of the isnad of this
narrative’s variants:
3. Hammam ibn Munabbih from Abu
Hurayrah (rta)
Abu Hurayrah stated: “I heard God’s Messenger say: ‘Once a
prophet sat under a tree when an ant bit him. At this, he

Following is the schematic illustration of the isnad of this
narrative’s variants:
4. Muhammad ibn Sirin from Abu Hurayrah (rta)
4871
Abu Hurayrah stated: “I heard God’s Messenger say: ‘Once a

narrative’s variants:
None of the above variants of this narrative can be accepted
since they belie universal moral principles about prophets of
God. Killing a habitat of ants merely because one of them had
bitten a prophet does not even behoove a common person let
alone a prophet of God.
This narrative is also reported in mawquf
and maqtu‘
forms from Abu Hurayrah (rta) and Hasan al-Basri respectively.
